How many people can play at the same time?

It depends on the room:

  • Kidnapped (2-6)

  • Fortune Teller (2-6)

  • Arcade (4-10)

  • American Revolution (4-10)

  • Steampunk Airship (4-10)

  • Zombie (4-10)

Large groups may request to increase the limit by 1-2 players depending on the room's size. Check individual room pages for more information.

How long does it last?

Each event lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes a 15 minute introduction, 60 minutes in the escape room, and a 15 minute walkthrough after the event.

How much does it cost?

It is $30 per person in these events:  Kidnapped!, American Revolution, and ARCADE.   Steampunk Airship, Fortune Teller, and Trapped in A Room With A Zombie are $35 per person as they are immersive theater rooms with trained actors.

Is it scary?

The rooms are not meant to outright scare you. The Kidnapped! Room is meant to be quite creepy, has tight spaces, and for a portion of the experience you will be restrained and in the dark. The Zombie room is intense and you will be pursued by a zombie, but it is well lit. The Fortune Teller room is spooky but not very scary. The American Revolution, Steampunk Airship, and Arcade rooms are meant to be challenging but not scary at all.

Are there jump-scares?

These are not haunted houses. Some rooms may have abrupt sounds, special effects or flashing lights.

How old do you have to be to do the escape rooms?

It depends on the room. The Arcade room is appropriate for ages 8 and up. The American Revolution room has difficult puzzles but can still be enjoyed by those 10 and up.  The Steampunk Airship is intended for ages 12 and up for safety reasons. Children under 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult participant.

Kidnapped!, Trapped in a Room With A Zombie, and Fortune Teller are all 15 and up. Participants under the age of 15 WILL NOT be permitted in these rooms.

Children under 8 will not be permitted in most rooms. We do not provide childcare. In all the rooms, minors will need to bring a waiver signed by their parent/guardian.

I'd like to schedule a special time for my work group/family/team builder. Is that possible?

Yes, we do occasionally schedule special events outside of our regular business hours but they must meet the following criteria: only groups of 8 to 61 participants; all special events run at full price ($30-$35 per person); special events must be requested 10 days in advance to ensure proper staffing. Check out our Team Builders page for more info & to request your event!

Do you take walk-ins or do we need to schedule in advance?

We do not take walk-ins or same day reservations online.  All escape room events must be scheduled online at least one day in advance.  We occasionally take same-day reservations for small groups over the phone. If you don't see an event time that suits you, you can try emailing or calling us for more information.

Can I observe a room?

Generally the answer is no. But if you want to make a special argument, feel free to contact us at info@portlandescaperooms.com.

What happens if one of my group members is late?

We offer a 5-minute grace period after the event start time for groups that are running late. After that, we will begin deducting time from your event. It is up to you to decide whether to wait for your teammate and take the time penalty or begin on time without them. We do not refund for unused seats.

How early should we arrive for our game?

You should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled event. If your group is late, we will either have to reschedule your booking, or begin deducting time from your 60 minutes to stay on schedule.

Am I really going to be locked in a room?

Yes!  But not really.  Each room has a way to get out that is unlocked in case of an emergency.  Furthermore, there will always be a game master watching you in case your group needs assistance.

My 'friend' is claustrophobic. How big are the rooms?

This has not been a problem.  Our smallest room is larger than a child's bedroom and is over 150sf.  The Kidnapped! room has been renovated September 2017 and currently includes tighter spaces so the most claustrophobic participants might avoid that room.

Will there be other people in the room with us?

If you don’t purchase all the tickets for the event, other people might be put on your team to help escape.  Depending on the room, there may be an actor in the room with you.

Starting in July 2018, we offer Private Events on Wednesday nights.  This is your chance to have a room to yourselves!

What should we bring with us?

You only need to bring your best wits and puzzle-solving ability.  All items needed for solving the puzzles will be included in the room.

Are cell phones allowed?

Cell phone use in the escape rooms is not permitted. The use of electronic devices or outside tools are not permitted and you will immediately be asked to leave if you attempt to use them.

Do I need to be a rocket scientist to solve the puzzles?

Some of the puzzles are meant to be difficult, but you don’t need advanced science or math skills to succeed.

Can I do the escape room more than once?

You are welcome to do the room more than once, but the puzzles will only change if the room theme is changed.  And we don’t want you spoiling the puzzle-solving fun for others on your team that might be doing it for the first time.   Note that we have redesigned and renovated the Kidnapped! and American Revolution rooms. So if you did those rooms prior to September 11th 2017, then it is reasonable to come back and do them again as 90% of the puzzles have changed.

What happens if we don’t escape in time?

At the end of 60 minutes, the moderator will unlock the room.

What if we can't make it to our event?

In rare instances, rescheduling far in advance may be allowed. Rescheduling too close to the event date may incur a fee.

What if something comes up and we need to leave?

At any point you can ask the moderator to unlock the door and let you leave.  You will not, however, be allowed back in the room.

I have a great escape room idea. Do you take suggestions?

Yes!  We are always eager to hear your suggestions.  Furthermore, we are also looking to collaborate on larger projects if you have skills to provide.  We might also have a space to sublet you if you want to build your own escape room and run it at our next location. Contact info@portlandescaperooms.com with you suggestions/proposals.
